South Africa’s capacity to safely dispose of medical waste is being scrutinised, with the World Health Organization (WHO) flagging the problem as a “ticking time bomb” on a global scale.
According to the global health body, this threatened both human and environmental health while exposing the dire need to improve waste management practices.
The circular economy goes beyond waste management or recycling, and rather “signifies a comprehensive approach to sustainable transformation, encompassing social, environmental and economic aspects”.
